Creating a well-loved ADU

KMA worked with an owner couple to create a beloved new home on their property from a prefabricated A-frame. Our team helped enhance the comfort and energy efficiency of the house, incorporating elements such as continuous mineral wool insulation, high-performance glass, a heat recovery ventilation system, a mini-split heat pump system, and a glazed door that opens the wall fully to the outdoor deck. The design embodies our focus and commitment to meeting high sustainability standards under the guidance of Senior Associate Justin Mikecz. Initially intended to be a rental ADU, the owners have decided to make the house their own home in a few years. HOME SWEET HOME AT AMBER DRIVE

On December 2, 2023, Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco welcomed eight new families to their 100% affordable ownership homes and presented them with keys. The families, guests, volunteers, city representatives, and neighborhood residents came together to celebrate the completion of the new homes at Amber Drive. The families played a part in building their own homes, and KMA was proud to be the architect and part of the team of professionals working together to bring the reality of home ownership to these long-displaced families. KMA received unanimous Planning Commission approval for our project at 3260 26th Street. Commissioners lauded this “exemplary” project for its sensitivity to the local context (the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, in San Francisco’s vibrant Mission District) and user-friendly design (well-laid-out units and multiple options to enjoy open space). The new building will add 42 much-needed 1- and 2-bedroom units of rental housing, 7 of which will be available below market rate.
